FPD Board of Trustees Announces

New Head of School

To Families and Friends of First Presbyterian Day School,

It is with great excitement and deep conviction that the Board of Trustees of First Presbyterian Day School announces the conclusion of our Head of School search. Since learning of Dr. Patterson’s departure, the Board—alongside faculty, staff, parents, and our broader community—has been in fervent prayer for God’s guidance in leading us to the individual He has prepared for FPD’s next chapter. We are truly grateful for your prayers, and we are confident that God has directed our steps throughout this process.

In January, we partnered with a national search firm, NextEd, which developed an “Opportunity Profile” after interviewing more than 100 individuals, including faculty, parents, students, donors, and members of the Board. This profile was shared nationally and attracted over 30 applicants. NextEd carefully evaluated the candidates and presented seven to the Board for consideration. Through Zoom interviews, we narrowed the pool to four, then to two finalists for face-to-face interviews and a campus visit. After much prayer, discussion, and discernment, one candidate emerged as the clear choice—unanimously affirmed by the Board.

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Matthew Paul Kitchell has been selected as FPD’s next Head of School. Matt has faithfully served as Upper School Principal for the past 11 years and previously taught at FPD for a decade prior. His deep love for our school, servant’s heart for our students and families, and long-standing commitment to Christian education make him uniquely qualified to lead us forward. After attending Mercer University, he and his wife, April, chose to raise their family in Middle Georgia, their home for 25 years. They are deeply invested in the community and their church, First Presbyterian Church, as well as their family and friends.

Mr. Kitchell says, “My hope has always been to do the highest good and have the greatest eternal impact.” He articulates an understanding of the high calling of a Christian educator and believes that, for the good of our city and for the sake of the gospel, such a calling is more important than ever. With a thoughtful and visionary approach, Mr. Kitchell has already begun planning to address the challenges facing FPD and other private Christian schools today, in close alignment with the Board’s strategic vision.

We believe, with full confidence, that FPD is poised to continue its legacy of providing excellent Christian education and fulfilling its mission to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory. And we firmly believe Mr. Kitchell is God’s appointed leader for this next season in our school’s 55-year history. Please join me in continued prayer for God’s guidance and blessing as we begin this exciting new chapter together.

For God’s glory,
Terri Harper
