January 13, 2014 – First Presbyterian Day School has selected Matt Kitchell as the Interim High School Principal for the 2014-2015 academic year. Kitchell will step into the new role in June 2014 as current principal, Joe Childs, returns to classroom teaching.

“Months ago, Mr. Childs indicated to us that he would like to return to teaching full time,” said Gregg Thompson, Headmaster at First Presbyterian Day School. “Mr. Childs has done an excellent job. We are pleased that we were able to identify talent internally to continue moving our high school forward.”

Kitchell has served as a teacher and golf coach for First Presbyterian Day School for the past ten years. He graduated with a B.A. from Mercer University and an M. ED from Walden University. He and his wife, April, have three children Catch (Second Grade), Kate (Pre-K), and Sarah (2 years).

“We are confident in Mr. Kitchell’s abilities,” said Thompson; “Matt wants to make sure he feels comfortable with the demands of the new role and not interacting with students as a classroom teacher. We believe his love for students, current leadership role with the faculty, and administrative gifts will be a good fit as principal.”

Childs gives his full support for Kitchell.

“I have enjoyed my tenure as principal, but look forward to stepping back into the classroom on a regular basis,” said Childs. “It is comforting to know the position will be assumed by someone as competent and devoted to the school as Matt.”
